NEW ORLEANS — At the annual Institute of Food Technologists trade show, most exhibitors are showcasing new products, initiatives, technologies, and ideas. However, Corteva Agriscience stands out as a completely new entity. The company officially launched its independent operations on the first day of the conference and trade show. “We’re just one day old,” said Doyle Karr, the director of consumer insights and social license at Corteva, during an interview at their expansive two-level booth.

Previously a division of DowDuPont, Corteva was spun off as part of the long-awaited restructuring this year, becoming an independent, publicly traded company. Focused exclusively on agriculture, Corteva specializes in seeds, crop protection, and digital platforms that leverage data to enhance farming productivity. They also produce Omega-9 canola oil and Plenish soybean oil.

Karr emphasized that Corteva is not a traditional agricultural company. “We are founded on the purpose of enriching the lives of both producers and consumers,” he stated. “Our goal is to operate as a production agriculture company with a food company mindset, understanding consumer needs.” This approach aims to determine what the food industry requires to better support farmers in their success.

With a background in biotechnology public policy at DuPont, Karr recognizes that while Corteva has extensive knowledge about food producers, understanding consumers is equally important. In his new role, he is focused on exploring global food systems and identifying ways to connect farmers and consumers, fostering success for all parties involved.

Corteva’s strategy includes various initiatives. The company has launched the Food Chain CoNNEXT program, which serves as a bridge between farmers and food manufacturers, ensuring that the right crops are available for ingredient sourcing. Corteva offers a diverse range of seeds that cater to both consumer and manufacturer requirements, from organic to non-GMO options. By closely collaborating with food companies, they can communicate specific needs to farmers, ensuring a reliable supply.

Keri Carstens, Corteva’s global regulatory lead, noted that previously, the company’s focus was primarily on farmers’ perspectives. Now, with consumer needs in mind, they are expanding their approach to include a broader set of parameters. “It’s almost like a checklist that has grown,” she explained.

Karr pointed out that while Dow and DuPont had consumer-focused efforts, they were mostly indirect. Now, Corteva is taking a more proactive approach, much to the approval of food companies. “When we talk about our mission, they say, ‘Welcome to the party. It’s about time,'” Karr remarked. “They emphasize that if you’re in agriculture, you’re also part of the food industry.”

Corteva prioritizes collaboration with food companies, initiating conversations that delve deeper than mere product sales. Wendelyn Jones, global leader of Food Chain CoNNEXT, highlighted their enhanced focus on meeting sourcing requirements. “We aim to create synergy beyond just adding efforts together, truly amplifying our impact,” Jones stated. This approach fosters dialogue about sourcing and supply chain issues within the food industry.

Karr explained that these discussions often begin with manufacturers articulating their challenges, which can lead to revealing solutions that Corteva hadn’t previously considered. Issues like pesticide residues in food products are among the concerns. Corteva can assist farmers in applying chemicals responsibly to mitigate residue issues and guide manufacturers in sourcing compliant ingredients. Additionally, the company addresses the importance of protecting bees, which are vital for pollination and sustainability. By finding the right protective measures, Corteva can ensure that consumers receive the necessary information.

Though Corteva is a new player in the market, it is already carving a niche. While other entities are attempting to connect farmers, manufacturers, and consumers, Corteva integrates seed production for staple crops and digital systems aimed at improving yield and efficiency. This comprehensive portfolio, combined with their consumer-centric focus, positions Corteva to become a leader in the industry, ultimately benefiting farmers.

Karr concluded by emphasizing the dual benefits of their approach, stating, “It’s not only the right thing to do, but it’s also good for business.” Furthermore, Corteva is exploring innovative products such as calcium citrate malate vitamin D3 and magnesium tablets to enhance overall health and wellness, further demonstrating their commitment to enriching lives across the agricultural spectrum.
