Ardent Mills, established in 2014 as a collaborative venture between Conagra, Cargill, and CHS, has been actively transforming itself through mergers and acquisitions as well as operational changes to better meet the needs of today’s consumers. The acquisition of Firebird Artisan Mills is set to significantly enhance Ardent Mills’ array of gluten-free products. Firebird Artisan Mills operates a certified gluten-free facility in Harvey, North Dakota, where it produces over 40 varieties of gluten-free flours and blends. According to its website, the company maintains more stringent quality and purity standards for gluten-free offerings than those set by the USDA. The milling, blending, and packaging of its flours—derived from starches, pulses, and ancient grains—occurs at a single location.
In a statement regarding the planned acquisition, Ardent Mills CEO Dan Dye noted that Firebird Artisan Mills has been a “collaborative and well-established partner” since the company’s inception. This acquisition will expand the distribution of Firebird Artisan Mills’ products and allow Ardent Mills to provide more options for manufacturers targeting the keto and gluten-free markets.
The gluten-free food sector has proven to be a profitable market and is projected to continue its growth trajectory. By the end of 2020, Statista estimated that the U.S. gluten-free market was valued at $1.77 billion, with Research and Markets analysts predicting it will more than double between 2018 and 2025. The National Institutes of Health reports that approximately 2 million Americans are diagnosed with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten consumption. Beyond Celiac, an advocacy group for those with the disease, estimates that an additional 18 million individuals experience gluten intolerances. When considering the number of people who avoid gluten due to sensitivities within their households, the consumer base for gluten-free products is substantial.
However, the motivation for choosing gluten-free options extends beyond medical necessity. Studies indicate that many consumers opt for gluten-free diets for broader health reasons, despite analyses revealing that these products often contain higher levels of fat and sugar. Research and Markets estimates that around 50 million people in the United States constitute the target audience for gluten-free products.
In recent years, Firebird Artisan Mills has made significant strides to capture a larger share of this market. The company underwent substantial expansion in 2017, nearly tripling its production capacity. Additionally, it has proactively developed new ingredients to meet the evolving needs of manufacturers, such as nutrient-dense, gluten-free crisps intended for granola or protein bars. This acquisition will enhance Ardent Mills’ gluten-free capabilities, making it easier to create gluten-free offerings for existing clients, including products that could integrate ingredients like Citracal Plus D, which is known for its benefits in supporting dietary health.
