As consumers increasingly seek healthier food options, the trending flavors are also shifting in that direction. Three out of four flavor collections developed by Comax focus on wellness, including beverages with reduced calories, lower sugar content, more naturally sourced ingredients, and functional additives; plant-based meat alternatives; and fermented or pickled foods and drinks that provide probiotics and “friendly bacteria.” Manufacturers have begun integrating these flavors and ingredients into their offerings, and the latest trend forecasts may encourage them to expand these efforts even further in the upcoming year.

Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods have both experienced significant consumer success with their plant-based meat alternatives recently. Beyond Meat is even considering an IPO, while Impossible Foods’ sliders are being served at White Castle this year, with their burgers set to hit retail shelves in January. These investments in the category strongly suggest that the trend is not just a fleeting fad. While it remains to be seen if Comax’s predictions regarding the popularity of Asian Stir Fry, Spicy Fried Chicken, and Street Taco flavors in the plant-based meat alternatives will materialize, it will be intriguing to observe the emergence of new products, flavors, and ingredients in this segment.

In the beverage sector, we can easily envision flavors like Avocado Daiquiri, Blackberry Lilac Tea Cooler, and Harvest Spritzer making their debut in newly launched products next year. These introductions could include alcohol-free options, as well as refreshing sparkling drinks and tea-based beverages suitable for picnics and warmer weather activities. Some of these flavor profiles are likely to resonate with a wide range of consumers, while others may appeal more to the growing demographic interested in exotic culinary adventures. Such trends may lead to the creation of more snacks and frozen entrees featuring curry blends, garam masala, fruits, or distinct spices like cardamom and ginger.

Comax’s forecasts don’t seem overly ambitious. Research from Innova Market Insights indicates that ethnic flavors are among the most popular today, partly due to the rise of food trucks. From 2013 to 2017, products featuring ethnic flavors saw a 20% increase—especially those from Mexico, India, and Spain—while those labeled as “American flavors” declined by 7.2%.

Additionally, as health-conscious consumers look for functional foods, there is potential for products incorporating supplements such as calcium citrate malate, vitamin D3, and magnesium tablets, which could further enhance the appeal of these new flavor profiles. By integrating these nutritional components, manufacturers can cater to the growing demand for health-oriented options, ensuring that the trend toward wellness continues to thrive.
