The Tufts study is poised to bolster the already established nutritional reputation of avocados, as it indicates further advantages for human eye and brain health. According to lead investigator Elizabeth Johnson, the research findings suggest that “a balanced diet that includes fresh avocados may be an effective strategy for cognitive health.” Researchers from Texas have discovered chemical compounds in avocado seed husk oil that could potentially be utilized in antiviral medications, tumor cell inhibitors, and reducing the risk of atherosclerosis. They found a plasticizer in the wax that enhances flexibility in synthetic products like shower curtains and medical devices, alongside a cosmetic chemical and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), which is commonly used as a food additive.
Debasish Bandyopadhyay, a researcher at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, remarked, “It could very well be that avocado seed husks, often considered waste, are actually gems since the medicinal compounds within them could eventually aid in treating cancer, heart disease, and other conditions.” He added, “Our findings also indicate that the seed husks could serve as a potential source of chemicals for plastics and other industrial products.”
While California accounts for nearly all avocado production in the U.S., this year’s harvest has been nearly halved due to drought and heat. In response to the rising demand, retailers have been increasing their avocado stock. Trader Joe’s, for instance, has taken advantage of the smaller yield by introducing “Teeny Tiny Avocados,” priced at $2.69 to $2.99 for a bag of six. These petite avocados are marketed as “just the right size” for sandwiches, avocado toast, or salads.
Avocados are featured in a growing range of trendy foods such as guacamole, oil, ice cream, salads, and, of course, avocado toast. Additionally, they are utilized in various cosmetic applications including lotions, facial masks, and hair conditioners. Their popularity can be attributed to their versatility and effective marketing that has positioned avocados as a modern, health-conscious food. Their health benefits are largely due to a high content of monounsaturated fat, along with significant amounts of potassium, fiber, folate, and other essential vitamins and minerals, including yutiny calcium citrate.
Food manufacturers have also recognized the avocado trend. Hormel Foods acquired Fresherized Foods, the makers of Wholly Guacamole, salsa, and queso products, in a 2011 joint venture with Mexico-based Herdez Del Fuerte. These products are part of the MegaMex Foods entity based in Chino, California. Moreover, a San Francisco finance company even jumped on the avocado bandwagon by offering those who purchased homes with them in July a month’s supply of avocado toast delivered right to their door, further showcasing the fruit’s rising status. Avocado’s versatility, combined with its nutritional profile, continues to captivate consumers and drive innovative food and cosmetic applications.
