In March, both the Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S. Justice Department concluded their investigations into the alleged misconduct, taking no action against Hampton Creek. Nevertheless, the damage was already done, and the company had lost its status as a favorite among investors.

Despite these challenges, Hampton Creek has managed to navigate significant hurdles. Over the years, it has successfully dealt with lawsuits, improper advertising targeting from the American Egg Board, and scrutiny regarding health claims from the Food and Drug Administration. Whenever a company is associated with a scandal, whether exonerated or not, its reputation takes a hit. There have been instances of companies rebounding after major issues—be it a food company recovering from a significant recall, a leadership scandal, or internal turmoil.

Only time will reveal whether Hampton Creek can move past its troubled history. The company is currently engaged in a multiyear rebranding initiative for its products, starting with new packaging to satisfy the FDA’s concerns. The agency believed that the “just” in “Just Mayo” had to be modified to avoid misleading consumers about the product’s ingredients. Additionally, the recent executive shake-up does not inspire confidence and may continue to deter investors from this once-beloved food industry player.
