Lagunitas, which began as a regional craft beer brand and is now fully owned by Heineken International, is not the first brewery to create a beer infused with cannabis compounds. Dad and Dudes’ Breweria from Aurora, Colorado, has crafted General Washington’s Secret Stash, which includes approximately 4 mg of cannabinoids derived from industrial hemp extract and contains no THC. It remains unclear how well the new IPA, or any cannabis-infused beers, will be received by consumers. The novelty alone will likely draw many eager to try it. As reported by Fortune, SuperCritical boasts a “very earthy taste with hints of pine and citrus—quite distinct from a traditional IPA.”
Combining cannabis and hops in brewing isn’t a significant leap, as they are genetically related members of the Cannabinaceae family, sharing terpenes as a key ingredient. Heineken, which acquired a 50% share in the California-based craft brewery in 2015 and purchased the remaining stake in May, clearly has confidence in Lagunitas. Lagunitas has a deeper connection to cannabis than many other breweries. Established in 1993, the company faced a suspension of its brewer’s license in 2005 due to marijuana-related incidents at its facility. In recognition of that event, one of their signature beers is named Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale, while several new Lagunitas beers are set to launch on April 20—informally recognized as a day for celebrating cannabis culture.
