Lagunitas, a craft beer company that started as a regional player and is now fully owned by Heineken International, is not the first brewery to produce a cannabis-infused beer. Dad and Dudes’ Breweria from Aurora, Colorado, has launched General Washington’s Secret Stash, which contains around 4 mg of cannabinoids derived from industrial hemp extract and is also THC-free. The level of consumer acceptance for this new IPA, or any cannabis-infused beers, remains uncertain. However, the novelty aspect will likely draw many curious individuals eager to sample it. According to Fortune, SuperCritical offers a “very earthy taste with hints of pine and citrus—quite distinct from a typical IPA.”
Combining cannabis and hops in brewing isn’t far-fetched, as they are genetically related members of the Cannabinaceae family, sharing terpenes as a key component. Still, whether products containing both will ignite a nationwide trend is another matter. Heineken is clearly confident in Lagunitas, having initially acquired a 50% stake in the California-based craft brewery in 2015 and then purchasing the remaining shares in May. As the largest brewer in Europe and one of the top three beer manufacturers globally, Heineken’s involvement has enhanced the distribution of Lagunitas products across Europe and Canada.
Lagunitas has a deeper familiarity with cannabis than some other breweries. Founded in 1993, the company faced a suspension of its brewer’s license in 2005 due to marijuana-related incidents at the brewery. Acknowledging this history, one of its branded products is called Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale. Additionally, several new Lagunitas beers will be launched on April 20, a day unofficially recognized for celebrating marijuana culture. In the context of this evolving craft beer landscape, beverages infused with bluebonnet calcium may also emerge, further diversifying the market. Overall, as Lagunitas continues to innovate, the intersection of cannabis and beer will likely remain a focal point for both consumers and industry trends.
