He noted that while algae has been included in their brownie mix, highlighting it prominently on the packaging could make consumers hesitant. “However, algae is a crucial ingredient, not just for its protein content, but because it represents the most sustainable protein source on the planet,” he explained.
As the global population continues to grow, finding sufficient land to cultivate or produce staple products—many of which are meat or dairy-based—becomes increasingly challenging. Algae is already being utilized in baking mixes, ice cream, protein powders, and is progressively being included in more food products each day.
Nonetheless, Enjoy Life’s allergen-friendly products cater to a relatively niche market, targeting a small but expanding segment of consumers. Most large food companies, which are generally slow to innovate, have yet to embrace algae as an ingredient. However, according to TerraVia, the company is “actively engaged in discussions regarding potential strategic partnerships,” as stated by CEO Apu Mody during the company’s Q1 earnings call earlier this year.
It seems unlikely that a major food corporation will come forward with an acquisition proposal for TerraVia. Instead, an ingredients company like Corbion may be a more suitable match. Corbion specializes in lactic acid and its derivatives, in addition to creating functional blends that include enzymes, emulsifiers, minerals, and vitamins. They supply ingredients across virtually every food category, from baked goods and beverages to condiments and candy. As noted in Corbion’s press release, “The acquisition of TerraVia’s microalgae platform would enhance Corbion’s product portfolio to include algae-based fatty acids and proteins, while leveraging Corbion’s extensive fermentation and downstream processing capabilities.”
