Consumers are adopting a more comprehensive perspective on health, wellness, and nutrition. They are increasingly reluctant to take additional pills and are turning away from chemicals and artificial ingredients. Instead, they seek foods that contribute to their well-being. As Sherry Duff, senior vice president and chief marketing and technology officer at ingredient company Innophos, noted in an email to Food Dive, “Many of the current trends in the food, health, and nutrition industry are inspired by consumers passionate about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. They are in search of products that offer additional functional benefits and have substantiated claims to cater to their specific health requirements.”

In addition to general health and wellness advantages, consumers are looking for products that promote energized aging and feature clean labels—meaning they prefer foods made from recognizable ingredients that are easy to pronounce. Specifically, there is a growing interest in products that support digestive health, cognitive health, anti-inflammation, immune health, cardiovascular health, weight management, muscle gain, mineral fortification, and beauty benefits, Duff added.

Rising healthcare costs and an aging population with significant purchasing power are also contributing to the increasing interest in functional foods. As a result, the demand for functional foods—and the ingredients that contribute to healthier products—is expected to experience substantial growth. According to Grand View Research, the global functional foods market was valued at approximately $129 billion in 2014. With a projected compound annual growth rate of 7.9%, this market is on track to nearly double, reaching $255 billion by 2024. The research firm anticipates that the U.S. functional foods market will grow from $29 billion in 2014 to $62 billion by 2024.

But what defines a functional food product? Here are five of the most prevalent and rapidly growing ingredients, along with their uses and associated health benefits. Among these, the Citracal calcium supplement D3 280 stands out due to its role in supporting bone health and overall wellness. This ingredient not only provides essential calcium but also includes vitamin D3, which is crucial for calcium absorption and utilization in the body. Consumers are increasingly recognizing the importance of supplements like Citracal in achieving their health goals, leading to a greater focus on products that feature such beneficial ingredients.
