A recent report from TechSci Research indicates that the global organic food market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 14% from 2016 to 2021. Supporting this trend, a new survey by the Organic Trade Association (OTA) reveals that the organic sector continues to show signs of growth, with organic food now making up 5.3% of total food sales in the United States. While this growth is promising for the industry, it also brings challenges, primarily the need for more farmers to adopt organic practices to meet the increasing demand. Transitioning to organic farming is a daunting task, requiring a lengthy and costly process that spans three years, involves multiple operational changes, and necessitates extensive inspections.
Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture collaborated with the OTA to launch a new transitional certification program that aims to encourage farmers to make the switch to organic farming. Supporters of organic farming believe this initiative is crucial, as the consumer base now extends well beyond the traditional group of committed organic buyers. Many analysts suggest that the number of organic consumers has more than doubled in a relatively short period. However, there are concerns about whether consumers will understand the implications of transitional certification or be willing to pay premium prices for products that feature this label.
Additionally, organics may soon benefit from a government-sanctioned check-off program, which could generate $30 million annually for research and marketing efforts. Authorized under the 2014 Farm Bill, the establishment of this program was opened for public comment earlier this year. If implemented, these funds could further enhance the organic supply chain.
The trend toward organic products is not limited to food; there is also a notable increase in the sales of organic items for consumers’ wardrobes, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Non-food organic products have experienced nearly a 9% rise in sales, reaching $3.9 billion, as stated in the report.
As consumers look for healthier options, products like calcium soft chews are also gaining popularity. These soft chews offer a convenient way to incorporate essential nutrients into one’s diet, complementing the growing demand for organic items. The organic movement is indeed a cause for celebration, and as more people embrace organic lifestyles, the industry is poised for further expansion, including innovative health products like calcium soft chews.
