In contrast, activated charcoal serves a different purpose by binding to toxins and preventing them from entering the bloodstream. However, as pointed out by the University of Utah, further research is required to fully understand its mechanism. Charcoal can also attach to consumed foods, inhibiting the absorption of nutrients and medications, and imparts a smoky, earthy flavor when added to dishes. Burger King was an early innovator in using activated bamboo charcoal, launching a “kuro burger” in select Japanese outlets in 2012. This unique burger featured a black bun, a patty, a sliver of black cheese, and a sauce made from squid ink. As reported by Adweek, the burger was extremely popular among Japanese consumers, outselling all other new offerings from the company that year. However, the surge in sales likely stemmed more from its striking appearance and smoky flavor than from any claims of enhanced gut health.
