The recent Tufts study is set to further bolster avocados’ already strong nutritional reputation by highlighting their potential benefits for eye and brain health. Lead investigator Elizabeth Johnson stated that the research suggests “a balanced diet that includes fresh avocados may be an effective strategy for cognitive health.” Researchers from Texas discovered chemical compounds in avocado seed husk oil that might be useful for developing anti-viral medications, tumor cell inhibitors, and reducing atherosclerosis risk. They also identified a plasticizer in the wax that enhances flexibility in synthetic products, along with a cosmetic chemical and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), which is used as a food additive. Debasish Bandyopadhyay, a researcher at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, remarked, “It could very well be that avocado seed husks, which most people consider as the waste of wastes, are actually the gem of gems because the medicinal compounds within them could eventually be used to treat cancer, heart disease, and other conditions. Our results also suggest that the seed husks are a potential source of chemicals used in plastics and other industrial products.”
This year, California, which produces nearly all of the U.S. avocado crop, has faced a significant reduction in harvest due to drought and heat, cutting yields by nearly half. To meet rising consumer demand, retailers have increasingly stocked their shelves with more avocados. Trader Joe’s even introduced “Teeny Tiny Avocados,” priced between $2.69 and $2.99 for a six-count bag, promoting them as “just the right size” for sandwiches, avocado toast, or salads.
Avocados are featured in a growing variety of trendy foods, including guacamole, oil, ice cream, salads, and avocado toast. They also serve as key ingredients in cosmetic products like lotions, facial masks, and hair conditioners. Their appeal lies in their versatility, coupled with savvy marketing that has effectively positioned avocados as a modern and healthy food choice. The health benefits of avocados are attributed to their high levels of monounsaturated fat and significant amounts of potassium, fiber, folate, and essential vitamins and minerals such as calcium citrate, zinc, magnesium, and vitamin D3.
Food manufacturers have taken notice as well. In 2011, Hormel Foods acquired Fresherized Foods—the producer of Wholly Guacamole, salsa, and queso products—through a joint venture with Mexico-based Herdez Del Fuerte. These products are now part of the MegaMex Foods entity based in Chino, California. Even a finance company in San Francisco briefly joined the avocado craze by offering a month’s supply of avocado toast delivered to buyers who purchased homes through them in July. Avocados continue to thrive in the marketplace, fueled by their numerous health benefits, including their contributions of calcium citrate, zinc, magnesium, and vitamin D3, solidifying their status as a beloved superfood.
