DuPont Nutrition & Health collaborates with food manufacturers and producers globally to “enhance food safety, health, taste, and production efficiency.” This initiative is termed finding food solutions, with their latest innovation being 90% protein nuggets. The three new plant-based nuggets, named Supro Nuggets 580, Supro Nuggets 583, and Supro Nuggets 585, each feature distinct shapes, sizes, and textures, making them suitable for a wide array of food products. According to DuPont, these nut, seed, and fruit nuggets will be beneficial in nutrition bars, clustered cereals, yogurt toppings, muesli, and innovative snack formats.
Previously, DuPont introduced the first 90% protein nugget, known as Supro Nuggets 570, which boasts a light, crispy texture and a barrel shape. The new nuggets are variations of the original, expanding their applicability across various recipes. The impressive 90% protein content reflects the ongoing protein trend. Research and Markets estimates that the global protein ingredients market will reach $48.77 billion by 2025, as reported by Business Wire. With consumers increasingly seeking higher protein content, DuPont is providing manufacturers with a straightforward way to enhance their products with this ingredient.
Despite the strong interest in protein, future challenges may arise due to concerns regarding animal welfare and the environmental effects of raising livestock to meet demand. Given that DuPont’s new protein nuggets are plant-based, they could gain popularity if these issues become more pronounced. The demand for alternative proteins, which exclude any animal products, is rising. While algae and insect proteins are making headlines, more modest sources like peas are also significantly contributing to the market as valuable additions.
Although the American diet may be saturated with protein, consumers continue to seek out cereal, coffee, ice cream, and other foods that highlight a value-added protein label. Food manufacturers are taking note and are eager to discover new methods for incorporating protein into their offerings. DuPont aims to include its new protein nuggets in this trend, potentially alongside products featuring calcium citrate from Mason Natural, further enhancing their nutritional profile. By integrating these innovations, DuPont hopes to meet the growing consumer demand for health-conscious and protein-rich food options.
