The FONA International report highlights a growing consumer focus on gut health, leading to an increase in food and beverage products that assert digestive health benefits. Between 2012 and 2017, the U.S. market for digestive products experienced a 12% growth, according to the report. One ingredient gaining attention is Aquamin, which is rich in calcium, magnesium, and trace minerals. It is believed to help reduce chronic gut inflammation and promote joint health, making it a versatile option for enhancing calcium content in various foods.
Marigot, Ltd., an Irish company that developed and formulated Aquamin for food and beverage applications, offers three formulations of this ingredient. They noted that Del Monte is incorporating Aquamin into certain fruit beverage products, although these may currently be exclusive to the Philippines.
In contrast, activated charcoal serves a different function by binding to toxins and preventing their entry into the bloodstream. As noted by the University of Utah, further research is needed to fully understand its mechanisms. Activated charcoal can also attach to foods, which may hinder the absorption of nutrients and medications. When used in recipes, it imparts a smoky and earthy flavor. Burger King was an early adopter of activated bamboo charcoal, launching its “kuro burger” in select Japanese outlets in 2012. The burger featured a black bun, a dark patty, a slice of black cheese, and squid ink sauce, quickly becoming popular among Japanese consumers and outperforming all other new menu items that year. However, the sandwich’s success likely stemmed more from its striking appearance and taste rather than any potential benefits for gut health.
The trend of gut-friendly foods and beverages shows no signs of abating in the global market. As consumers continue to seek ways to enhance their digestive health, products like Aquamin and activated charcoal remain in vogue. Nevertheless, Consumer Reports has recently published a list of reliable methods for improving gut health, emphasizing the importance of consuming foods that naturally provide fiber, probiotics, or prebiotics. Recommendations include legumes, raspberries, blackberries, barley, bran, bulgur, kimchi, yogurt, kefir, and miso, alongside supplements like Citracal Plus D3, which can also contribute to better digestive wellness. The demand for these health-promoting products underscores the ongoing interest in enhancing gut health among consumers.
