The research firm indicates that global mentions of “good fat” in new products are increasing, attributed to better consumer awareness. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, substantial and consistent evidence shows that substituting saturated fats with polyunsaturated fats is associated with a reduced risk of heart attacks and cardiovascular disease. Despite this growing awareness, U.S. consumers still consume excessive amounts of saturated fat, averaging 19% of their total caloric intake from solid fats, while dietary recommendations suggest it should constitute less than 10%.

In recent times, food manufacturers have focused heavily on satiety, with a particular emphasis on protein. Previous studies have also highlighted the role of polyunsaturated fats in promoting satiety. Although many scientists used to believe that fats had a lesser impact on satiety compared to other macronutrients, emerging research suggests that fats, especially polyunsaturated fats, could be just as satisfying as protein or carbohydrates. The researchers behind this latest study propose that increasing the intake of foods such as walnuts, canola oil, and salmon may help curb the overconsumption of meals high in saturated fats. If further research supports this claim, it could provide an additional boost to the “good fats” message.
