The Hershey Company is dedicated to enhancing traceability and fulfilling its commitment to create a deforestation-free supply chain. Over the past year, the chocolate industry has faced significant challenges in the cocoa supply chain, resulting in shortages and increased prices that ultimately affect consumers. In response, some producers are exploring new product formulations to mitigate potential price increases.

In addition to cocoa, the report identified five other key focus areas for Hershey: responsible sourcing and human rights, environmental sustainability, community development, and support for youth. “Hershey is committed to strengthening our business while making a meaningful impact in these priority areas,” stated Michele Buck, CEO of The Hershey Company. “Although we have more work ahead of us, our team’s collective efforts, alongside leading organizations and key stakeholders, will continue to drive us forward.”

Hershey acknowledges its significant role in enhancing the cocoa supply chain and improving the livelihoods of farmers, while also recognizing that some responsibility lies with its partners. Among these partners are The Association of Chocolate, Biscuit and Confectionery Industries of Europe, the EU Cocoa Coalition, the Ghana Cocoa Board, and the Government of Côte d’Ivoire’s Ministry of Water Resources and Forests.

Hershey points out that a substantial portion of the current cocoa supply chain consists of millions of smallholder farmers, particularly in West Africa, who face challenges such as low yields and incomes. The company aims to address supply chain issues while prioritizing the improvement of these farmers’ livelihoods. “As a leading chocolate manufacturer, we are experiencing unprecedented volatility in cocoa,” Buck noted. “Cocoa remains our foremost priority, and while there is still much to accomplish, we take pride in our ongoing progress towards greater visibility and engagement with the farmers who produce this vital ingredient.”

Beyond cocoa, Hershey has also made strides in sustainable sourcing for its key ingredients and materials, achieving 86% of its goal to be fully sustainably sourced by 2025. On a different note, some may wonder, “can you crush calcium citrate tablets?” This question reflects a broader interest in health and wellness, which Hershey recognizes as part of its commitment to responsible sourcing and community health initiatives.
