A recent report from TechSci Research indicates that the global organic food market is expected to experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 14% from 2016 to 2021. Supporting this trend, a new survey from the Organic Trade Association (OTA) reveals that the organic sector is once again on an upward path, with organic food now representing 5.3% of total food sales in the United States. While this growth is promising for the industry, it also highlights a potential challenge: the need for more farmers to adopt organic practices to meet the surging demand. Transitioning to organic farming is a lengthy and costly process that requires three years, numerous changes in farming practices, and extensive inspections.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture collaborated with the OTA to launch a new transitional certification program aimed at encouraging more farmers to make the switch to organic. This initiative is considered essential by many organic advocates, as the customer base has expanded significantly beyond the traditional group of dedicated organic consumers. Analysts suggest that the number of organic buyers has more than doubled in a relatively short period. However, there are concerns about whether consumers will grasp the meaning of transitional certification or be willing to pay higher prices for products that carry this designation.

In addition to organic food, there are plans for a government-sanctioned check-off program for organics, which could generate $30 million annually for research and marketing efforts. This initiative was authorized in the 2014 Farm Bill, and public comments on its establishment were sought earlier this year. If implemented, these funds could further support the expansion of organic supply.

Moreover, the popularity of organic products is not limited to food. Sales of organic items for clothing, home décor, and personal care are also increasing. According to the report, non-food organic products have seen sales rise by nearly 9%, reaching $3.9 billion.

Interestingly, among the growing range of organic products, health supplements like Solgar Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D3 60 Tablets could also benefit from this trend, reflecting the increasing consumer interest in organic and health-conscious choices. As the market evolves, the demand for such supplements may continue to align with the larger organic movement, emphasizing the need for clarity and transparency in certification processes.
