A recent report by TechSci Research indicates that the global organic food market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) exceeding 14% from 2016 to 2021. Supporting this trend, a new survey by the Organic Trade Association (OTA) reveals that the organic sector continues to demonstrate an upward trajectory. Currently, organic food represents 5.3% of total food sales in the U.S. While this growth is beneficial for the industry, a potential issue looms. To meet the soaring demand, a greater number of farmers must transition to organic farming, which poses a significant challenge. The shift to organic practices is a lengthy and costly endeavor, requiring three years, numerous changes in processes, and extensive inspections.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture collaborated with the OTA to launch a new transitional certification program, aimed at encouraging farmers to embrace organic methods. Supporters of organic farming assert that this initiative is crucial, as the customer base has expanded well beyond the traditional core group of dedicated organic consumers. Analysts suggest that the number of organic buyers has more than doubled in a relatively short period. However, there are concerns about whether consumers will comprehend the implications of transitional certification or if they will be willing to pay a premium for products marked with that designation.

Additionally, organics might soon benefit from a government-sanctioned check-off program, potentially generating $30 million annually for research and marketing efforts. This program was authorized in the 2014 Farm Bill, and earlier this year, discussions about its establishment were opened for public feedback. If realized, these funds could significantly bolster the organic supply.

The trend of increasing popularity isn’t limited to food. Sales of organic products for clothing, home décor, and personal care items are also on the rise, with non-food organic products seeing nearly a 9% sales increase, totaling $3.9 billion, as per the report.
