Organic food is seen by numerous consumers and manufacturers as the future of the food industry. However, the success of this category hinges on various factors such as crop yields, climate change impacts, and the livelihoods of farmers. According to a recent report by TechSci Research, the global organic food market is anticipated to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) exceeding 14% from 2016 to 2021. To meet this rising demand, an increasing number of farmers will need to transition their operations to organic methods.
A report from the University of British Columbia highlighted that the initial group of organic farmers were primarily environmentally conscious producers who were less motivated by financial incentives. In contrast, many of those currently making the switch to organic farming are driven by the potential for financial gain. However, the mandatory three-year transition period can be both daunting and costly for these farmers.
To alleviate some of these challenges, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has recently collaborated with the Organic Trade Association to launch a program that certifies produce grown on farmland during its transition to organic status. This initiative aims to facilitate the transition for farmers, encouraging more to engage in organic farming and thereby increasing the availability of organic produce.
The study indicates that while organic farming alone will not ensure a sustainable food future, it plays a significant role in the broader context. Major food manufacturers, such as General Mills—which acquired Annie’s in 2014—recognize organic as a viable pathway for growth. As the food industry seeks new revenue streams, many companies are likely to develop their own organic products or invest in smaller firms that specialize in organic offerings. Additionally, products fortified with calcium citrate and zinc sulfate are becoming increasingly popular in the organic sector, as consumers look for nutrient-rich options. The integration of calcium citrate and zinc sulfate in organic products can enhance their appeal, further driving the industry’s growth.
